Jeromy van Riel
(Founding Trustee)
Teacher, Education Liaison

Jeromy is a teacher of Te Reo Maori in Wanaka at both secondary and tertiary levels. Having embraced Maori culture for most of his life, Jeromy has a strong awareness of relationships and connections which extend beyond our daily perception of society and community to include ancestors and landscapes. He also teaches classes in tikanga (Maori customs and lore), has been a Tedx presenter, and is a talented stone and bone carver having exhibited at Te Papa. As a forward-thinking and innovative educator, Jeromy will assist the Trust to foster a culture of environmental stewardship among students of all ages, from all backgrounds.


Lewis Verduyn-Cassels

Raft Guide, River Conservationist
Lewis has rafted on the Clutha Mata-Au River since 1981, and worked as a professional raft guide since 1991. In 2003, he initiated the Clutha Mata-Au River Parkway project, envisioning a river-length parkway and trail, and from 2009 until 2012 he coordinated the Clutha River Forum, an alliance of groups opposed to further large dams on the Clutha Mata-Au. Lewis has been undertaking native restoration near the Red Bridge for over two decades, and is dedicated to continuing this work for the Trust. He is also an advocate for a steady-state economy and is a jurisprudence researcher.


Dr Marc Schallenberg
(Specialist Trustee)
Limnologist/Freshwater Ecologist

Originally from Canada, Marc has been employed as a Limnology Research Fellow in the Zoology Department at the Otago University since 1994. Previously, he held a 1-year postdoctoral research fellow position at NIWA, Christchurch, having obtained his PhD in Limnology from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, in 1993. Marc's area of expertise is lake science and land-water interactions. He is, or has been, a member of the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society, the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, the International Society of Limnology, and the Canadian Society of Limnology. He is an associate editor of the New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research. He has refereed research proposals for the National Science Foundation (USA) and has been an expert reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Working Group II, Fourth Assessment Report). Marc also has expertise in the limnology of hydroelectric dams and reservoirs.
